Swell!

So this week I found myself a bit of free time and decided to put it to good use by entering the weekly illustration challenge that is Illustration Friday.  Each week participants are provided with a user-suggested concept, word, or phrase which they are to illustrate.

This week the word was “swell”.  Having been in generally good spirits, i passed on the more obvious and violent interpretations of the word and opted for the nostalgic route.

Gee, That's Swell!

So here we have it.  A goofy, old-timey, mid 20th century pilot type with a big dumb grin. Ready to sell you a coca-cola or some such… wait. What’s that?  Could it be… he’s a COMMUNIST?! Oh yeah… he’s a Communist.

Oh, hello.

Its been a busy couple of weeks, which is a good thing as I am now painting (and doing a bit of design) full time.  Promotion is of course the first thing to fall by the wayside during times of change and uncertainty.  Lucky for me I’ve had the privilege to work with some really great folks on some really great projects over the past couple of months, and I’ll finally be able to show off some of the art I’ve created in the coming weeks.

I’ve also taken on a couple of private commissions which have been a lot of fun.  Below is a drawing of a throne room I created for a fellow DeviantArtist.  If you would like me to paint something for you, please drop me a line (chrisreach@ymail.com) and I’d be happy to discuss subject and pricing with you.

Robot Santa Sketch

RoboSanta

Here’s a sneak peak at my Christmas card/ImagineFX contest piece/possibly ArtOrder contest piece if Jon Schindehette allows the double entry (I seem to remember that being against the rules of the blog, but I’ll ask).  Always nice to be able to use one piece for multiple purposes.

The theme for the ImagineFX contest was robot santa. I took it a bit further with a sort of 1920s art deco rocketeer-esque santa figure.  The color scheme will be, what else, red and white.  I’m playing with a cut-out color separation look but I might switch back to my normal painting style.  I’ll have the final up tomorrow, or at the beginning of next week.  There’s nothing like trying to figure out how to put a beard on a robot.

Skellenaut Sketch

Skellenaut

A quick drawing I came up with while warming up on the tablet earlier.  I suppose its sort of like the astronaut finds the puzzle box from Hellraiser in space (no, this exact same thing did not happen in Hellraiser IV… by the way, why did 80s horror icons always end up in space during the 90s?).

Something a bit different to start off a new week of daily sketches.  Hope everyone had a good weekend and remember to check back every day this week for a new sketch, painting, or nugget of information.

Back to the Future

Juggernaut

Juggernaut

Today we can say with a reasonable amount of certainty that there are no moon monsters and that a xenophobic race of diminutive green men are not planning humanity’s downfall from a base on Mars.  Indeed, we have outgrown the days when man can travel the stars in an aerodynamically preposterous cardboard boat with wings and pontoons glued on at random intervals (see: Himmelskibet).

And while it is possibly for the best that we have moved on from that last example it is, in my opinion, better to kick it old school from time to time and recapture the wonder of a retro-future than to get bogged down trying to make the ‘dark version of a painting of a graphic novel of a movie thats gritty and dark’.

Just saying, have some fun with it.

New Painting: Atomicon

Atomicon

A few weeks ago I saw a movie called Atomic Cafe. Its basically a feature length flic with a loose plot, pieced together from Cold War era propaganda and educational films.  Its hilarious, disturbing, and nothing short of genius.

Anyway, its interesting how differently we experience war and the threat of war today.  Its basically like… we don’t. The threat of global destruction was omnipresent for almost 50 years. Now we are so far removed from this concept we feel invincible.

Atomic weapons have unfortunately been used before, and will surely be used again.

The future is looking bright!

A Brave New World

A Brave New World

“Others will follow.  They will bring you war.”

Some authors and researchers suggest that Extra Terrestrials visited Earth in the distant past. It is hypothesized that ET provided us with knowledge, technology, religion, and perhaps even the ability to evolve to our “advanced” state.  Evidence does exist in cave paintings, ancient figurines, the bible, the bhagavad gita, and in ancient artifacts and structures that can be interpreted as evidence that this is indeed the case.

I won’t pass judgement on the theory here, but it really is fascinating once you get into it.

Mars Attacks…Again!

Fleet Commander (c) Chris Reach

I added a bit of polish to my Fleet Commander drawing. Much better now, I think.

Perhaps it was the Roswell anniversery last week, or my near obsessive listening to Escape Pod since learning of it’s existence, but I’ve had sci-fi on the brain recently. Still, it didn’t stop me from cleaning up an older semi-historical drawing of a Hospitaller Knight.
